Glenavy School Community
Glenavy Township is about a 20 minutes drive from Oamaru and a 45
minutes drive to Timaru and Glenavy straddles State Highway One.
The
school community consists of families from both the Hilderthorpe and
Glenavy sides of the Waitaki River.
It
is a rural environment with many families involved in some form of
farming.
There are a small number of families involved in businesses that support
or serve the community.
The Maori population of the area is low and in the main they are direct
descendants of the ancient Waitaha Tribe and the more recent tribes
Katimamoe and Ngaitahu. Glenavy Primary School acknowledges the Mana
and Tangata Whenua and the wider Maori community and wishes to foster
the positive partnership that has developed between the two.
Glenavy
offers very good community support to all its inhabitants.
