A Profile of Glenavy School

Glenavy School is a state co-educational full primary school.  Glenavy School has served the Glenavy township and rural areas for over a hundred years.  Today the school has a roll that has grown to over 76.

The school is bulk funded to convey the pupils to school and the Glenavy School Community Bus Trust is contracted to provide this service.  The buses are also used to transport children to cultural, social, sporting and academic events with neighbouring schools.

The School facilities include a modern two room teaching area, with a reading resource area.  There is a resource bay adjoining both classrooms, administration area, and a staffroom.  There is also a third and newly completed fourth classroom prefab. The new classroom will be officially opened by Jacqui Dean is the MP for Waitaki as part of the school's 120th reunion on Saturday 21st March 2009.

We are very proud of our additional building which houses a classroom, a large wet area for art work, a teacher resource room, one to one teaching area and a second sport's shed.  All this is capped of with a full length veranda and clear light roof.

A refurbished building houses a community library, resource rooms and a Phys Ed storage space.

Glenavy School has attractive, well established grounds.  Within the grounds there is a solar heated swimming pool with changing sheds, tennis court, adventure playground, various storage sheds and a community prefab.

The school is currently part of the AVRACS cluster and we participate in sporting and activity days with the other cluster schools with specific emphasis on the Year 8 pupils.

The 'Open Door' policy of the school is demonstrated in a variety of practical ways - school and community newsletters, district resource list, parents’ notice board, availability of curriculum documents and parent information booklets.

The school realises the importance of Road, Rail, Farm and Water safety teaching.

The school is a member of the Waimate Teachers' Centre giving access to more resources.  It lies on the boundary of Canterbury and Otago with pupils, teachers and Board of Trustee members using resources and facilities in both areas.
